Working with my clients
Silvia's approach to design

In this section Silvia talks about her approach to designing shoes for each client.

Shoes designed to match outfit at Dominican Republic Fashion Week My clients look to me to design shoes that fit their style and are distinctive, yet they have to be made using the best techniques and the finest materials. This is where tradition and modernity meet, to produce exciting innovative appearance but underneath the quality can be felt through proven materials and making techniques.

I believe that bespoke is timeless and universal. It transcends countries, cultures and times. A true bespoke designer must have the ability to approach each client project with an open mind and seek to understand the client before any design work is started. The execution of a bespoke piece may be highly influenced by country, culture and time, but not the process itself.

Style cannot be forced; it is a natural extension of the person. Style for one person is often artificial for someone else. Style requires an understanding of what works for you; your body shape, skin tone, age, lifestyle, character.

The craftsmanship side of bespoke must combine with the poetry of design. The correct interpretation of the style that works for the client requires poetry, beautiful, elegant design that is executed through the hands and eyes of the craftsman to deliver the finest bespoke footwear.

The concept evolves from interaction with the client. In the majority of cases I work face to face with my clients, to get to know them and understand their desires and preferences before I start to design. Over the course of several weeks I present design concepts to the client, and we work our way towards a specific design, with specific materials, colours and textures. I make mock-ups to verify size and fit before moving towards making the final shoes. Usually I present and fit the shoes for each client. Working this closely with each client avoids bad surprises at this last stage, and clients delight in the outcome that reflect their careful, considered input during the entire process.

Selecting from the finest materials Bespoke really works for my clients when they mentally switch from a passive to an active role in the bespoke process. Being active means putting your own passion into the design and creative side, working with me to design shoes that are truly exceptional. Sometimes this happens during my first meeting, with others it is gradual, transitioning after the second or third pair of shoes.
